Akilah Carter-Francique

The Institute for the Study of Sport, Society & Social Change - Executive Director

It is my honor to nominate Dr. Akilah Carter-Francique for the “International Leader Woman of Inspiration Award” for her trailblazing leadership, game-changing advocacy, motivating mentorship, and public-facing scholarship at the intersection of sports, society, and social change—locally and internationally. She empowers folks to work together through a phenomenal range of community-driven events (almost 100 last year alone), including collaborative, innovative projects exploring the power of art, song, and sport for women’s sport and social change. She works to advance racial and gender equity in sport worldwide as Executive Director of the Institute for the Study of Sport, Society & Social Change (the birthplace of the Olympic Project of Human Rights), Associate Professor in the Department of African American Studies (SJSU)—and through her ongoing thought leadership for the International Working Group Women in Sport Conference, the Laureus “Sport for Good” U.S. Research Council, and extensive “Sports Conversations for Change”.
