I remember working with youth at risk in East Vancouver early in my mental health and resilience career. I remember referring to “those kids from those families.” I cared deeply about helping them but I only had book knowledge on how to work with these youth. I eventually abandoned the traditional practice and opened my own hip hop dance space in an old warehouse where we began teaching about mental health, resilience, and the power of community through hip hop. It was a beautiful time.
