Keshia Hollman Dawson – Women of Inspiration™ Podcast | 2020 Women of Inspiration Diversity and Inclusiveness Award

Born and raised in Calgary, Keshia is a fourth-generation Albertan. She began her studies at the University of Calgary as a Bachelor of Arts undergraduate Honours student researching the relationship dynamics of Indigenous women in street gangs. Her community-based research and continued volunteer work with groups including Wellspring Calgary inspired her to advocate for all through law. She was accepted into the Faculty of Law in 2019 where she later became the President of the UCalgary Black Law Students’ Association.

The deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd drew international attention and peaceful demonstrations materialized in Calgary in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement. As a way of mobilizing this movement, Keshia implemented strategies for diversification within law by addressing discrimination issues such as the underrepresentation of Black and Indigenous people in law enforcement, law schools, and the legal profession. She assembled in her privileged position as a law student to diversify and improve the legal landscape for future generations.

She is now a Board Member with the Canadian Cultural Mosaic Foundation and Colour Factor as a result of her contribution to diversity, inclusion, and anti-racism.
