Three Words that best describe you!
Dreamer
Connector
Storyteller
A word can be a powerful guiding light. What is your word for 2021?
My word is connection. If COVID-19 taught us one thing, it’s that we NEED connections! My goal is to grow connections between the magazine and the community, between people and industry and between industry and industry.
Every Woman has a story. What’s yours?
I have been storytelling for my entire career through different venues...starting in the music industry as a performer(drummer) and proceeding through working in the not-for-profit sector telling stories with young people, teaching others how to story tell through teaching music and then through writing. Community Now! was born because I saw a disconnect between people and industry. Storytelling is the greatest form of knowledge sharing and this platform has allowed the community to bridge the gaps between people and industry.
What makes recognizing the achievements of women critical?
Women are the most diverse people I have ever met. They work, they ask for change, they take care of their families and do so much more. Add to that, their compassion and strength is visible to everyone. We need women leaders because of their compassion and strength.
Tell us about a Woman of Inspiration who inspires you.
My mom and my daughters. I call them wonder women! My mom is the most inspirational person I have ever met. She ran her own business, raised me and my brother and is always the first one there to pick people up. My kids teach me something new every day. They are my inspiration to be the best me.
What three things should be considered before starting a business?
1. Do you LOVE it? (most important trait of starting a business)
2. Are you solving a problem?
3. Do you have support?
Knowing what you know now, what would you have changed about starting your business or your career path?
I would have asked for more help at the beginning. We all need help!
COVID-19 is filled with lessons. What was one of the biggest lessons for you?
Covid-19 taught me that no matter what happens, community comes together. And that innovation is the key to success. We have to be innovative to be able to pivot.
What keeps you up at night?
Work keeps me up at night, literally...thoughts of how to pivot, be innovative, how to be creative...it’s not a bad thing. I actually enjoy the nights that my brain is running 100 miles a minute. To me that means I am on the right track.
What is the first thing you do to start your day to set yourself up for success?
I stand in my superhero pose, breathe in and tell myself I am going to rock it!
Operating a business can be lonely. What are some of your biggest challenges?
The biggest challenge in business is learning to not doubt yourself.
When you were 12, what did you want to be when you grew up? What advice do you have for young women? I wanted to save the world...or be a rock star…or a famous drummer travelling all over the world. Advice to young women? To dream BIG and surround yourself with people who dream big!
