Feature Speaker

Toni Marie Ion-Brown    General Manager, The Calgary Petroleum Club

Toni Marie Ion-Brown- Leaders Luncheon - Canadian Business Chicks

Toni-Marie Ion-Brown is reminded daily that dreams do in fact come true.
She recently made history by becoming the first woman General Manager at the helm of the Calgary Petroleum Club.

Growing up in Duchess Alberta, she remembers vividly watching a top news story in 1986, it was about a private club in downtown Calgary that did not allow women members. This disturbed her and she commented to her Mom, “who would be a part of a Club like that?” Her mother replied, “it will need to change if it wants to be successful.” The Club did change through the years and now has over 1700 full members, men, and women, from diverse professional backgrounds. The GM position comes at a very significant time as the Pete club completed a $7,000,000 major renovation this summer. Toni-Marie welcomes the challenge.

After post-secondary education, she stepped through the doors of the iconic landmark in 1990 and instantly felt like she belonged, and could make a difference. Starting as a server, she quickly moved on to the role of a supervisor. In 1999 she would become the Club’s Food and Beverage Manager. She was allowed to explore possibilities and so created compensation, bonus and retention programs that benefitted her team. But, Toni-Marie always knew she had more to offer, and set a new goal to be the first female GM of the Club. Now it was time to work even harder. She enrolled in the Certified Club Manager (CCM) Program with the Canadian Society of Club Managers (CSCM) and began knocking off the coursework! There are only 64 club managers in Canada that have the CCM designation, and she knew it was a standard of excellence she wanted to attain. Her studies were completed at the Ted Rogers School of Hospitality at Ryerson University in Toronto in 2015. Toni-Marie was promoted to Assistant General Manager that same year.
That year also just happened to be the beginning of one of the worst economic downturns to hit Calgary. Another challenge which brought more unwavering faith, determination, and grit for the second in command.
The next two years were spent controlling costs, adding value for Members to keep revenues up, and the beginning of strategic planning for the multi-million dollar renovation that she will soon be “quarterbacking”, an appropriate term for a busy lady who, along with her family are some of the biggest Stampeder fans around.

At the end of the day, Toni-Marie’s biggest passion is her relationships, whether that’s with her employees, Members, or colleagues at the Chaine des Rotisseurs. Growing up in a close-knit Alberta town left this mark on her. You will see this warmth extended if you happen to be in the Club’s lobby, or one of the dining rooms over the lunch hour as she welcomes Members, a handshake is often replaced with a big hug.
The remainder of 2018 will be a very exciting time for Toni-Marie and her team as they take a newly renovated Calgary Petroleum Club into its 70th year.
