At 40 years old I experienced what I call a mid-life awakening – a moment in time where I realized I had been sleepwalking through much of my adult life. I can say now, with it in my rearview mirror, that it was both the most difficult and most enlightening period so far in my life. Initially however, it was utterly devastating. I came face to face with the realization that the life I had worked so hard at building – the career, the house, the family – was one of achievement at the expense of fulfillment. Here I was, a middle-aged woman with everything I’d planned for but with a lost sense of identity, hardly recognizing the reflection in the mirror. I had been so busy. Busy checking all the boxes, following an image of what society thought or expected I should be. I had given so much of myself to others that I had neglected myself. All this human DOing had disconnected me from my human BEing. Seemingly small decisions added together over time led me far away from who I knew myself to be.
